Steps for you to build your morning routine and elevate your web development career

In this essay, I will explain how to build your morning routine and stick with it.

Unfortunately, most developers do not follow a routine and let various daily situations drive their day and activities.

They fear losing spontaneity in their day.

Following are a few reasons web developers don’t learn how to build their routines and struggle to make actionable progress.

  • Not being proactive
  • Resistance to change
  • Inability to prioritize tasks
  • Lack of time management skills
  • Lack of willpower & self-discipline

Don’t worry; I will explain how to overcome all these problems and build your routine!

Here’s how step by step,

Step 1: Identify the essential tasks you want to complete each morning

This will allow you to build a simple routine.

Identify the essential tasks you want to complete each morning to build your effective morning routine. These may include:

  • Drinking water to hydrate your body
  • Light exercise or stretching to activate your muscles
  • Meditation or reflection to clear your mind
  • A healthy breakfast to fuel your body
  • Planning your day to ensure you have a clear direction and focus

Step 2: Build your morning routine with 2–3 steps

Most people make the mistake of adding too many activities to their routine, making it complicated and challenging to maintain.

Instead, aim for simplicity by starting with 2–3 steps in your morning routine. This approach will make it easier to stick to your routine and help you avoid getting discouraged.

For example, your initial morning routine might involve the following:

  • Drinking water and doing light stretching
  • Meditating or reflecting for 10 minutes
  • Having a healthy breakfast

Once you’ve established this simple routine, you can gradually add more activities, such as planning your day, checking emails, or exercising.

Step 3: Follow your new morning routine daily

Consistency is crucial when establishing a morning routine.

Following your daily routine will become a habit within a few weeks, and you won’t have to put conscious effort into maintaining it. Doing so will make your routine second nature in a few weeks, and you no longer need to force yourself to maintain it.

To help establish consistency,

  1. Get enough sleep to feel well-rested
  2. Set a specific time for waking up each day
  3. Create reminders and set alarms for each activity in your routine, ensuring you don’t accidentally skip any steps.
  4. Be patient with yourself. If you miss a day, remember that forming a habit takes time and facing setbacks is normal.

Practicing consistency will set the foundation for your morning routine, benefiting your web developer work and overall well-being.

Step 4: Adjust and Optimize Your Routine Over Time

As you become more comfortable with your morning routine, take the time to evaluate which activities are genuinely helping you start your day positively and productively. Adjust your routine to ensure it works best for you and fits your priorities.

For example, you may find that working on a passion project before work helps boost your creativity for the rest of the day.

Step 5: Maintain Accountability and Stay Motivated

To ensure the long-term success of your morning routine, it’s essential to maintain accountability and stay motivated. You can achieve this by:

  • Create a habit tracking log and track your habit daily by check-marking them on this tracker. You can also use habit-tracking apps.
  • Sharing your goals and routine with a friend or family member who can help keep you accountable
  • Setting milestones and rewarding yourself when you reach them
  • Regularly reviewing your routine and its benefits to remind yourself why it’s essential

Sample morning routine

An example routine, a web developer might start their day at 5:00 am by drinking a glass of water and doing light stretching. Afterward, they could spend 10 minutes meditating or reflecting on their goals. Once refreshed and focused, they could have a nutritious breakfast before reviewing their schedule and planning their day.

My daily routine, I start my day at 4:30 every day by drinking two glasses of water and doing light stretching. It gives me instant energy and sets me up for the next 2 hours of a writing session. Then I review the day plan I created the night before and start with my first task. At 7:30 am, I make tea, wake up my family and eat breakfast with tea.

That’s a wrap,

Establishing a morning routine can significantly impact your daily productivity and overall well-being.

Following these steps will create a routine that sets you up for success and helps you tackle your tasks with renewed energy and focus. So, identify a few steps you already take in the morning to build your routine and follow them for the next few weeks. This will set the tone for a productive day ahead.

Remember to start simple and be consistent.
